Extra Credit Opportunity #5

Fifth grade students often have a hard time distinguishing between when to find the L.C.M. (least common multiple) and the G.C.F. (greatest common factor). We've been learning how to add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators and we have just started reducing fractions to lowest terms. With both of these objectives G.C.F. and L.C.Ms were discussed. How would you explain to a frustrated classmate the difference between the two and when to use them to help him/her understand? Any tips? Rules? Pointers?

Extra Credit Opportunity #4

Chaz lives 5/8 of a mile from school, Alex lives 7/10 of a mile from school, and Logan lives 2/5 of a mile from school. Which boy lives the farthest from school? Which boy lives the closest to school? Explain the strategy that you used!

Extra Credit Opportunity #3

While playing a round of Hexagon Duets, Maggie spun 1/3 and 1/12 and Anna spun 1/6 and 1/4. Will their team total be more than one or less than one? Explain how do you know?

Extra Credit Opportunity #2

Ethan and Dylan shared a pizza. Ethan said, "I ate 3/8 of the pizza." Dylan said, "I ate 3/4 of the pizza." Clarence said, "That's impossible." Is Clarence right or wrong? Explain your answer!

Extra Credit Opportunity #1

You have decided to bake a cake for your family. The recipe calls for 1 3/4 cups of sugar. You can only find two of the measuring cups, the 1/2 cup and the 1/8 cup. Write a number sentence showing how you could use these two cups to measure 1 3/4 cups of sugar. Write about your solution. Can you find more than one solution? If so....write it in your comment.

Fraction Christmas Trees

The fifth grade students worked very hard on their fraction Christmas trees the week before our winter break. First place went to Kathryn and Taylor, Second Place went to Shelby and Logan and Third Place went to Anna (red) and Breanna. We will be reviewing in 2009 with New Year's Fraction Hats!
