While playing a round of Hexagon Duets, Maggie spun 1/3 and 1/12 and Anna spun 1/6 and 1/4. Will their team total be more than one or less than one? Explain how do you know?
Their team total would be less than one. I drew a hexagon then divided it into 12 equal parts, then for 1/3 I colored in 4 parts, for1/12 I colored in 1 part, for 1/6 I colored in 2 parts and for 1/4 I colored in 3 parts so they ended up with 10/12 or 5/6.
1. Nedd to find the total of all the spins to see if it is less than 1 or more than 1.
2. Since all the deminators are the different, need to find the GCF (Greatest Common Factor).
3. Find the GCF by finding the greatest number that is a factor of all the numbers.
4. The GCF is twelve, because all the denominators are a factor of 12
5. That changes the fractions from: 1/6 x 2/2 = 2/12 1/3 x 4/4 = 4/12 1/12 x 1/1 = 1/12 1/4 x 3/3 = 3/12
You add all the fractions together, by adding the numerators. They all equal 10/12 which is less than 1. You can also reduce 10/12 to 5/6 which is still less than 1.
3. Calculate: 1/3 of 12 = 4. 1/6 of 12 = 2 1/4 of 12 = 3. 1/12 of 12 = 1. 4 + 2 + 3 + 1 = 10. 10/12 < 1. Explain: Because the denominators are different, I have to find a common denominator. The least common denominator for this group of fractions is 12. I convert the numerator to the appropriate value, with 12 as the common denominator. Now I add the numerators, resulting in a value of 10. Because the numerator 10 is less than the denominator 12, the team total is less than 1.
Maggie spun 1/3 and 1/12. 1/3 plus 1/12 is 4/12. Anna spun 1/4 and 1/6. 1/6 plus 1/4 is 5/12. So magie's total score and anna's is a combined total of 9/12. So anna and magie will not win because there total answere was no enough or over one whole.

1/3+1/12=5/12, which is only 1/12 away from half. 1/2+_1/2_=1 whole!
1/6+1/4=5/12, which is once again only 1/12 away from half, so they both round to half.
So the answer is neither, because it is not more or less than one, when ROUNDED!!!!!

5/12+5/12= EXACTLY... 10/12= less than one.
EXACTLY!!! NOT ROUNDED!
less than one
less than one.
1/3+1/12=10/24
1/6+1/4=5/12
10/24+5/12=20/24
Simplified as 5/6
Again I changed the factions to have the same denominator. My new factions are
1/3 = 4/12
1/12 = 1/12
1/6 = 2/12
1/4 = 3/12
Add them all up and the total fraction is 10/12. That is less then one.
Less cause all the numerators are all 1

1/4 of 12 = 3.
1/12 of 12 = 1.
4 + 2 + 3 + 1 = 10.
10/12 < 1.

i would say less than one because if you rounded all the fractions they all equal 0

Explaination:
1/3 changed to 4/12
1/12 still 1/12
1/6 changed to 2/12
1/4 changed to 3/12
Total=10/12
Their team total will be less than one!
1/3 x 4/4 = 4/12
1/6 x 2 = 2/12
1/4 x 3 = 3/12
4/12 + 2/12 + 3/12 + 1/12 = 10/12
less than one.
add 4/12, 1/12, 2/12 3/12 = 10/12
so it is less than 1
Maggie spun 4/12 and 1/12 = 5/12
Anna spun 2/12 and 3/12 = 5/12
5/12 + 5/12 = 10/12
That's less then 1 whole.
It is less than one. I figured 12 is the lcd and I added 4/12 + 1/12 +3/12 + 2/12 which was 10/12. Less than one.
Less than 1. Maggie 1/3 + 1/12 = 4/12 + 1/12 = 5/12; Anna 1/6 + 1/4 = 2/12 + 3/12 = 5/12
5/12 + 5/12 = 10/12 which is less than a 1.
