Extra Credit Opportunity #4

Chaz lives 5/8 of a mile from school, Alex lives 7/10 of a mile from school, and Logan lives 2/5 of a mile from school. Which boy lives the farthest from school? Which boy lives the closest to school? Explain the strategy that you used!

I changed my fractions so they would all have the same common denominator. The new factions are
5/8 = 25/40 Chaz
7/10 = 28/40 Alex
2/5 = 16/40 Logan

Farthest from school Logan
Closet to school Alex

Logan lives the closest to school and Alex lives the farthest. To figure out the problem I found the least common denominator for 8,10 and 8 which was 40 then changed each fraction using 40 as the denominator and found that Chaz was 25/40, Alex was 28/40 and Logan was 16/40.

Calculate: Chaz = 5/8 miles
Alex = 7/10 miles
Logan = 2/5 miles
The least common denominator = 40.
5/8 = 25/40.
7/10 = 28/40.
2/5 = 16/40.
Closest is Logan.
Farthest is Alex.

Explain: Because the set of fractions have various denominators, in order to compare the fractions, I have to find a common denominator, which will be the least common denominator. In this case 40 is the l.c.d. Next I convert the set of fractions to fractions which have the l.c.d. of 40. Now because the denominators are equivalent, I can compare the numerators. The closest will have the smallest numerator, which in this case is Logan. The farthest will have the largest numerator, which in this set of fractions is Alex.

You can make Logan walk into tenths instead of fifths. So Logan has to walk 4/10 Alex has to walk 7/10 and chaz has to walk 5/8 of a mile. The GCF of 8 and 10 is forty so you make all the fractions into 40 pieces. So Logan walked 16/40 and Alex has to walk 28/40 and chaz has to walk 25/40's. So Alex lives closest to school and Logan lives the farthest away from school.

Um, first I sent 1 of the fractions to you about this question, you might be able to upload it with this.... not sure though.

I drew it out- 7/10 is the biggest fraction, 2/5 is smallest. In other words Alex is closest to school, Logan is farthest.

Logan lives the closest to school. Alex lives the farthest away from school. To figure out this problem, I used benchmarks. 5/8 would go in the half colum. 7/10 would also go in the half colum, but is a little bigger than 5/8. 2/5 would go in the half colum as well but is smaller than 5/8, which is smaller than 7/10. So that makes Logan the closest to school, and Alex lives the farthest from school.
