Extra Credit Opportunity #1
You have decided to bake a cake for your family. The recipe calls for 1 3/4 cups of sugar. You can only find two of the measuring cups, the 1/2 cup and the 1/8 cup. Write a number sentence showing how you could use these two cups to measure 1 3/4 cups of sugar. Write about your solution. Can you find more than one solution? If so....write it in your comment.

if you need 1 3/4 cups of sugar and you have 1/2 cup then you could add 1/2+1/2= 1 so now you need 3/4 of a cupp so if you add 1/8+1/8= 2/8 so now were moving on and then you would 1/8+1/8+1/8+1/8=4/8= 1/2 so then your going to add 1/8+1/8+1/8+1/8+1/8+1/8= 6/8= 3/4 so you would use the half cup twice and the 1/8 cup 6 time - abbie umphlett

Yes, 1/2+1/2+1/2+2/8=1 3/4, three halves equals 1 1/2 cups and 2/8 is the same as 1/4 which all together equals 1 3/4.
One half cup plus 1/2 cup = 1 cup

I changed 3/4 to 6/8. That way I knew to use 6 of the 1/8 measuring cups. Then I used two of the 1/2 measuring cups to make one whole cup of sugar.
2nd solution - change one whole to 4/4 and add it to 3/4 which equals 14/8. I could use 14 - 1/8 cups of sugar to equal 1 3/4.
You could you 2-1/2s and 6-1/8s to make 1 and 3/4 cups. Or you could use 3-1/2s and 2-1/8s. Or you could use 1-1/2cup and 10-1/8s. Or you could use 14-1/8s.
if you need 1 3/4 and you only have a 1/8 and a 1/2 cup then you can add 1/2+1/2 which = 1 so then your left with the 1/8 cup so if you add 1/8+1/8 it = 2/8 so if you add 1/8+1/8+1/8+1/8= 4/8 reduced 4/8 = 1/2 so then if you add 1/8+1/8+1/8+1/8+1/8+1/8=6/8 and when this is reduced it equals 3/4 so when you add 1+3/4 it equals

First you will have to fill the one half cup up twice and dump it each time than you fill six eights up. That would equal one and three fourthes cups of sugar. you could also fill up the half cup three full times and then fill it up half up of the half cup and you would get one and three fourthes cups of sugar.

1/2 is changed to 4/8, 1/8 is still 1/8. 4/8+1/8=5/8 5/8+5/8=10/8 which is 1 2/8. 1 2/8+5/8=1 7/8,
1 7/8 is to much so you need to subtract. I will try, 1 7/8-1/8= 6/8. 6/8=0.75 3/4=0.75! You need to use both of these cups 4 1/8 times to get the same amount that you would get if you used the 1 3/4 cup!
Ok, take two 1/2 cups to equal to 1 whole. Take another 1/2 cup to equal to 1 1/2. 2/8 is equivalent to 1/4. I only need 1 more fourth. So 3 1/2 cups and 2 1/8 cups equal to 1 3/4.
** You can also just use all 1/8 cups, ex: 8 1/8 cups for 1 whole. 6 1/8 cups to equal to 3/4.
I would use threee 1/2 cups and
one 1/8 cup to make a total of
1 3/4 cups of sugar for the cake receipe.

I used the 1/2 cup twice which equals 1 cup. I used the 1/8 cup 6 times which equals 6/8 which is 3/4. This is 2x 1/2 cup + 6 x 1/8 cup

or
1 3/4 = 7/4 = 14/8
